Publisher’s Note LO Profile Magazine July/August 2010

PunchLine… “It’s ok mom, we used the Vacuum!”

Slowly count to 10, take a deep breath and find the humor. Every day, we are faced with the most serious situations, decisions and responsibilities, and yet not a single day goes by without a good reason to crack a smile. The hard part is recognizing a funny situation or comment and reacting with laughter.

Well, if you have children, especially in the early growing, learning and maturing stages (that would be from ages 1-12), a good laugh happens on a daily basis. I am privileged to have two wonderful children in that age range who keep my humor from being sucked up by tension and anxiety.

What is it about youth’s spontaneity for fun and good times? Most likely their energy and lack of inhibitions keeps them in an unforced happy circle. It’s contagious you know. So how do you get into that circle without a class in geometry, even when you are no longer considered youth? Surround yourself with laughter and happy people, of course!

L•O PROFILE Magazine is happy to report laughter within our office walls, spontaneity in staff outings and creative young energy during work hours. This cocktail combination is intoxicating and good for business, the soul and for making a magazine successful with new and innovative ideas.

Which is why L•O PROFILE brings you our annual “Great Book of Entertainment, Dining and Nightlife!” This issue is always geared to the young at heart. Our content is planned to put a smile on your face page after page with bright colors, happy people and young energy. So where’s the humor in this Publisher’s Note? If only I could tell a story like cover celebrity comedian Kathleen Madigan.

Well here goes my funny TRUE “kid” story… (Not for the squeamish)!!!

Summertime is an awkward time when work and child care are a struggle to balance. I’m happy to report that this summer has been pivotal in that my Mira and Jace are now old enough to take care of themselves, on occasion, as I meet deadlines and keep my community event obligations. So during the typical, midweek, daily home sitting, my children are faced with decision-making situations that are steered by pure child logic with their goal being to do the right thing and stay out of trouble.

Jace, my youngest, calls Mommy’s cell phone with an upset stomach and reports he has vomited. Then proceeds to finally conclude that it must be the half-frozen pizza roll he ate minutes ago. I panic, of course, knowing that his older sister surely is not up for cleaning up puke. “Jace, please try to get it cleaned up. Have Mira help you. I will be home as soon as I can get away.” Jace responds quickly, “No, Mommy, it’s OK. We’ve already taken care of it. We used the vacuum.” Noooooooo!

The clincher: New vacuum, less than a month old, Lowe’s $400. Story to tell for a lifetime: Priceless. Laughter: Good for business, health and parent/child relationships! “Laugh in ’10” is my motto for 2010. Check out our website at lakeprofile.com and go to our videos or join us for L•O PROFILE’s weekly radio show, Thursday mornings on 92.7 at 9:30. We’ll share a good laugh with you.
